“It all revolves around mobile phone use,” Seb said.

“I think we can say mobile phones are affecting our self esteem and social relationships at the moment.

“An organisational psychologist I spoke to yesterday talks about the three Ds of modern mental health — that is Depression, Drugs and Devices.

“It gives you an idea of the impact mobile phones are having when they’re mentioned in the same conversation as the other two.”

Port has enlisted Hugh van Cuylenburg of the Resilience Project to help devise policies about healthy phone use in conjunction with the playing group, and came up with three major rules for the players to abide by.

“At Port Adelaide now you’ll find that mobile phones are completely banned from meetings.

“If you need to take notes every player brings a pen and paper so they’re actually looking the person in the eye who’s speaking.

“Number two, they’re having two social catch ups a week, a lunch and a breakfast, mobile phone ban at that playing group social catch up.

“And number three, phones are banned for one hour after the game, so the players actually sit around and say ‘Hey Will, remember in the fourth quarter where I run past for the handball, you burnt me, then we went back around and we kicked the goal?’

“Those are the moments that bond young footballers.”
