The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning across southern Victoria, including Melbourne, with a strong front on the way.

The BOM has forecast strong northerly winds over parts of the state ahead of a cold front, crossing the state late on Thursday and on Friday morning.

The warning covers Horsham, Warrnambool, Seymour, Maryborough, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne and Traralgon.

Damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h and peaking at 90 km/h are tipped over elevated areas today, peaking as high as 100 to 110 km/h tonight.

Isolated wind gusts around 90 km/h are possible in lower lying areas, as are showers and thunderstorms.

The State Emergency Service has warned people to move vehicles under cover and secure loose objects, as well as staying away from any fallen power lines.
