Richmond veteran Shaun Grigg is unlikely to feature early in the season as he battles a knee complaint.

Grigg is struggling with a joint issue that affects his ability to train at a high intensity.

Richmond's general manager of football Neil Balme said Grigg will most likely be unavailable to play in the next four weeks, all but ruling him out of Richmond's round one clash with Carlton in 16 days.

“Shaun has been doing some good running sessions, but he just needs more time for his knee to improve, so that we can progress his training loads,” he said.

“Given that he’s in a bit of a holding pattern with his training, at this stage we think it’s unlikely that he’ll be available to play in the next four weeks.”

Grigg impressed through the midfield and as a part-time ruckman in 2018, averaging 21 disposals and four inside 50s per game.

The 30-year-old, who has rarely missed a game in recent years, was a part of their 2017 premiership.
