Western Australia's fourth lot of snow fall of the year has arrived. A cold front has hit the Great Southern in the peaks of Bluff Knoll.

The Weather Bureau's Bob Tarr says the icy cold front to open Spring season is a significant event.

"It's likely that there will be some snow on the Bluff Knoll and on Stirling Ranges. There potentially could get some snowflakes over the higher terrain which is fairly rare." Tarr said.

As a dusting of snow arrived in the early hours of the morning, so did a small crowd of hikers to watch the spectacle from the summit.

With a strong cold front hitting the southwest, a 10-year low for this time of year is set to be broken.

“With the cold air coming in, there is the chance of a thunderstorm and hail during this evening and continuing into tomorrow morning,” Mr Tarr said.

“And we will see sharply colder air coming into the region overnight and then into tomorrow so a pretty cold start to the spring.”
