A car's had to be rescued in South Melbourne after getting stuck in flood waters.

15 millimetres of rain hit the city on Tuesday afternoon as a huge storm front crossed the city, seeing heavy rain and flash flooding.

One area that was flooded was the York Street Bridge in South Melbourne, near the South Melbourne Market.

It didn't stop one confident driver backing themselves to find their way through.

Footage posted by Channel 7 shows the moment the white car got about halfway through before starting to float and eventually getting stuck.

A few helpful onlookers braved the flood water and helped push the car back to the road.
