Fans of grunge legends Soundgarden have started a petition to name the famous newly-photographed black hole after Chris Cornell.

The first ever photo of an actual black hole was shown off last week, with Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration managing to put together the incredible logistical feat to show the celestial body which is 55 million light years away.

To celebrate the milestone moment in scientific history — and obviously in reference to seminal hit Black Hole Sun — Soundgarden fan Giuliana Jerrin is lobbying to name the black hole after singer Chris Cornell.

“I ask NASA, the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration and all the astronomers and scientists involved in this discovery, to name this black hole after Chris Cornell,” she wrote.

“This would be a ‘surreal’ and amazing way to honor his life and his contribution to music.”

The petition currently has over 37,000 signatures out of its stated aim of 50,000.
