UPDATE: Juvenile Justice has responded to claims there's an average of one assault on a staff member every week at Kariong's Frank Baxter facility.

The figures suggest there have been 25 assaults at the centre in the past six months, and have prompted the Public Service Association to call on the state government to introduce special units within these centres to manage high-risk detainees.

Justice has responded by saying the safety and well being of staff and detainees is its highest priority, while $1 million has been spent to update training.

Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre is the largest of its kind in NSW, with a capacity for 120 young men aged between 16 and 21 years old.
