A storm warning has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology this afternoon, with severe thunderstorm set to hit Sydney's west.

According to BoM, the thunderstorms are moving towards the northeast, and are set to affect the Blue Mountains area south of Hazelbrook and Penrith by 3pm.

Heavy rainfall is on the cards, which may result in flash-flooding, damaging winds and large hailstones.

The SES has advised that people should move their cars under cover and away from trees, put away loose items in the yard, and stay away from floodwater or fallen powerlines.
