The 2017 sugar cane crushing season is up and running, with the iconic locomotives hauling their cargo from Smithfield to Babinda from Tuesday June 13, right through to November.
As with previous years, locos will be hauling bins on local cane railway lines seven days a week, 24 hours a day during the crushing season.
Dedicated cane rail crossings operate throughout local suburbs and across main highways, and while all train level crossings are signed, some minor road crossings may not have flashing lights.
Cairns Police are asking motorists to slow down when approaching train crossings, stop and give way to trains at crossings.
Parents should ensure their children do not play on train tracks or near cane bins at all. They are also reminded to ensure children who are keen fishers do not to fish off train bridges
