Someone in Sydney’s racing industry has apparently taken out a full page ad in the national newspaper The Australian today to advertise their new race, The Everest.

The ad takes aim at the Melbourne Cup, saying that The Everest is the new richest turf race in the world.

Post

The Everest ran for the first time ever this year, held at Randwick on the second Saturday in October with prize money of $10 million.

12 slots for the race are sold at $600,000 for the race, which isn’t eligible for Group status.

This year it was won by Redzel.

How can the Melbourne Cup possibly compare? All our race has is over 150 years of history and prestige.

It makes stars of both horses and jockeys — think of Glenn Boss taking Makybe Diva to a third consecutive cup in 2005 and Michelle Payne becoming the first female winner of the race on 100-1 shot Prince of Penzance in 2015.

This race (and the ad) is a vintage Sydney move.

They’re jealous of of our great race and insecure about our status as the sporting capital of the nation so they’ve thrown some cash around to try and grab some attention, like a kid on their sibling’s birthday.

They can have the richest race in the world if they want — hell, call it the richest race in the universe — but everyone knows it will never get close to the Melbourne Cup.
