Australian players have been taking the piss after the TV broadcaster refused to turn down the stump mics in the Test series against South Africa.
The Aussies requested for the mics to be turned down, and when host broadcaster Super Sport said no, they started shilling for rival sponsors.
Ausse players in the field started discussing the quality of Qantas’s services (the ICC’s major sponsor is Emirates Airlines), and bigging up XXXX.
South African beer Castle Lager is a sponsor of the series.
The piss take is said to be a protest, with the Aussies feeling that the stump mic volume is a deliberate ploy to catch them misbehaving, according to the News Corp.
However, Mitch Marsh said it was just a joke.
“I wouldn’t say it was a protest, I’d say it was a great opportunity to give our sponsors a bit of a plug,” Marsh told News Corp.
“Qantas, thank you for getting us here safely. The stump mics really for us as players on the field are irrelevant, it’s about us as a team getting the ball in the right areas and we don’t really worry about that, it was a bit of a joke to give the sponsors a bit of a plug.”
