A Ballarat bus driver has been jailed for five years and three months for ramming into the Montague Street bridge and injuring six people.

Jack Aston was driving for Gold Bus Ballarat in 2016 when he smashed into the bridge, which is notorious for collecting trucks.

The bridge has a three metre clearance, but Aston’s bus is 3.8m.

"Three of your passengers saw the bridge. How it is that you did not, is astonishing," Judge Bill Stuart told Aston according to the ABC.

"Why you were so grossly inattentive is unknown to me.”

Aston has to serve at least two and a half years of the sentence.
