The Monkees bassist Peter Tork has died at the age of 77.

“It is with beyond-heavy and broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our friend, mentor, teacher, and amazing soul, Peter Tork, has passed from this world,” a statement posted to Tork’s Facebook page said.

He was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare form of cancer that impacts the tongue, in 2009.

Michael Nesmith and Mickey Dolenz are the only two surviving band members.  Dolenz took to social media tweeting about his heartbreak after hearing the news.

Peter Tork is survived by his fourth wife, Pam, daughters Hallie and Erica and son Ivan.
