Internal Affairs will oversee a homicide investigation into the circumstances which led to an officer firing three shots, and killing a man, at a Yenisey Cresent home yesterday afternoon.

The Police Commissioner remained tight lipped today, refusing to say what prompted the officer to draw his weapon.

He did confirm, however, that no other weapons were used by police during the incident.

"No other use of force option was exercised, and three shots were fired by one officer."

Chris Dawson also said the address was known to officers, who had attended the house on a number of separate occasions.

Police were reportedly responding to a domestic violence incident yesterday afternoon when the shooting occurred.

"They've made a report which involves family violence, and there was mention made of a knife, I can't go any further than that," he said.

Police Minister Michelle Roberts also spoke today and described the incident as being tragic.

"No officer really wants to use force, it's about protecting the vulnerable and protecting the community. Obviously it's tragic that someone lost their life yesterday, but that's something that will be subject to further investigation," she said.
