There’s one thing a bloke needs to own: a barbecue.

There’s one thing blokes do at a barbie: hang around the barbecue.

There’s one thing a host bloke doesn’t like at their barbie: another bloke taking over because they have no idea what they’re doing.

You might be terrible on the tongs but you can at least get your pride and joy up and running to make it look like you know what you’re doing.

You’ll need to build it

Barbecues come flat-packed. Don’t expect to be able to roll into a shop and leave with a fully assembled barbie. You’ll need to set aside an hour or two.

Buy a gas bottle + gas

If you’ve gone with a gas barbecue, you’ll need a gas bottle. The shop will probably sell empty ones. Some can fill them, some swap your empties for full ones. Some do both.

Do some maths to see what’s cheaper. Buy an empty gas bottle and fill it? Or buy an empty gas bottle and swap it for a full one?

Read the instructions

Actually read them. The moment you move away from the instructions, you’ll stuff something up and something won’t fit. You’ll then spend hours dismantling and reassembling.

Handy tip: Keep the screws/nuts etc loose at the start and tighten everything when you finish.

Season your plates.

Before you start cooking on cast iron, you need to season them. Seasoning also helps to keep rust away.

  1. Give your plates a scrub with a soft brush and warm, soapy water to free your plate of any crap it accumulated in the manufacturing and shipping processes. Don’t use steel wool.
  2. Dry the plate with paper towel.
  3. Turn on the burners to heat up the plates. Medium heat will do. Leave the plates on for a bit so they’re warm.
  4. Pour on some cooking oil. Rub it in with paper towel until you stop seeing black coming off the plate.
  5. Finally, reheat the plate for around half an hour.
  6. You’re ready to go!
