The Simpsons has a history of meta-humour, but the most recent episode of the show has gone to another level.

One of the show’s most famous scenes is one where Homer disappears into a hedge after being told by Ned Flanders that he can’t hang out with their family.

The scene became a meme, used generally to slate sports fans who were chirpy early in a game before losing.

Overnight Australian time, the Simpsons latched on to the meme themselves in the newest episode The Girl On The Bus.

If you think about it, it was inevitable that the Simpsons would end up parodying themselves like this given their own position in pop culture.

The show is currently in its 30th season and doesn’t look like stopping any time soon.
