It was the 3rd February 1954 when Queen Elizabeth II sailed into Sydney and first stepped foot on Australian soil.

The then 27-year-old was given a rousing reception wherever she went, including here on the Coast.

As the Royal train travelled from Sydney up to Newcastle, large crowds gathered at Wyong and Gosford to catch a glimpse of the monarch.

Stations were extensively repainted to ensure they were looking at their best for Her Majesty’s arrival.

While many where overjoyed to catch a glimpse of the Queen, Nine-year-old Helen Sundstrom had a less then ideal experience. ‘The Gosford Times’ of Wednesday, February 10, 1954 reported that ‘Helen slipped in the children's area just as the Royal Train approached, and by the time she had regained her position, the train was disappearing’.
