There's a little controversy about Nick Riewoldt's marks record.

On Saturday night it was thought Roo broke the all-time VFL/AFL record for most career marks, overtaking Gary Dempsey.

Riewoldt took 12 marks last night, and sits on 2913 career marks, believed to be seven ahead of Dempsey (2906).

But apparently Dempsey has some marks missing.

There's a mystery game back in round 11, 1975, in which stats went completely unaccounted for, according to veteranĀ AFL statistician Col Hutchinson.

Dempsey kicked a goal in that game, but no other stats - disposals, marks, anything - are down.

It's unsure exactly how many marks Dempsey took in that game, but he averaged 10.3 marks for the season, not once taking less than five in a game.

It's more than likely Dempsey took enough in that game to ensure he still has the record, though the exact number is unknown.

Riewoldt was told about it on Channel 7's AFL Game Day.

"I might have to get Col's number," he laughed.

"I did a radio interview after the game and they said well done, then I did another interview and they said too bad, you've got a couple more weeks to go.

"I'm not too sure where it sits at the moment!"
