Footage has emerged of a road sign falling off a gantry and smashing into a car on the Tullamarine Freeway last night.

9 News got a hold of the dashcam footage of the sign coming loose then crashing on to the top of a 54-year-old woman’s car, giving her no chance to get out of the way.

The car was crushed in the impact, with its roof caved in and debris all over the road.

The woman was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition with minor neck injuries.

A Transurban spokesperson told 9News.com.au that they "undertook initial investigations overnight to check other similar signs installed as part of the CityLink Tulla Widening project.

“Safety is of paramount importance to us and we will continue to work in collaboration with VicRoads, Major Road Projects Victoria and CPB Contactors as part of the investigation.”

Major Roads Project Victoria and Victoria Police are investigating.
