There's some exciting news for our region, with three new Tasmanian Devil pups making their new homes in Kuranda at the Rainforeststation Nature Park.

Rainforeststation Wildlife Team Leader, David Kelly joined Tammy Barker & Bodge Tuesday morning to discuss the arrival of the one-year-old pups, after a successful breeding programme brought the species back from the brink of extinction.

“These brothers have come all the way from Taronga Western Plains Zoo,” David said.

“They've been part of the captive breeding programme which has been keeping this species away from the brink of extinction and, thankfully, the breeding programme has been going so well that some of the larger places are now looking to move on some of their younger animals and, yeah, we've gotten lucky, we've gotten three boys and they’ve turned one recently, so they are young and energetic.”

The team at the Rainforeststation are looking to team up with local schools to help name the arrivals.

“We really want to work with the community and make sure that people feel a real affinity for these animals,” he said.

“What better way than to get the kids involved and to have them be able to come up with all their best names, then come out and see the animals that have been responsible for naming.”

To celebrate their arrival, Rainforestation will be hosting additional Tasmanian Devil Presentations this coming Saturday 28th May at 11am and 1pm.

Wildlife presentations are a daily activity in the Koala and Wildlife Park at Rainforestation, and alongside the extended Devils presentations, there’ll be plenty more to see including a Feeding Presentation featuring resident 5-metre Estuarine Crocodile ‘Jack the Ripper’.
