Tiger Numbers On The Rise Thanks To Dreamworld

Sumatra's tiger population is recovering thanks to conservation efforts by Dreamworld.

The theme park's Wildlife Fund has raised $2,000,000 to help pay for anti-poaching groups in Sumatra, Nepal and Russia, and it seems to be paying off.

General manager of life sciences Al Mucci said there had been a recorded increase in the number of big cat sightings on the Indonesian island over the past six months.

"Our anti-poaching team... did 57 patrols and saw evidence of tigers 57 times, so that's the first time ever in the last four or five years that that's occurred," he said.

"Numbers are there and they're increasing, and only one snare was picked up...where in previous years over 40 or 50 snares were discovered," he said.

"The presence of these men and women, who actually risk their lives doing this, they're actually deterring the trade of illegal wildlife," he said.
