Today marks 42 years since Australia's worst rail disaster - the Granville train derailment which claimed the lives of 83 people and injured over 200 others.
On January 18, 1977, a 6.09am train from Mount Victoria in the Blue Mountains was carrying over 450 passengers by the time it departed Parramatta on its way to the city.
At 8.10am, the train derailed while travelling at speeds of 80km/h on a curve at Granville and hit the supports of the Bold Street bridge above the tracks.
The train was tipped over and the first two carriages were completely off the tracks.
The bridge was unable to hold the weight and crushed the carriages underneath.
