Geelong defender Tom Stewart has undergone successful surgery on a fractured eye socket.

Stewart fractured his eye socket in a marking contest against Fremantle last Sunday.

The incident saw him admitted to hospital.

Geelong head physio Mark Young said the surgery was "significant".

"You’ll see from the vision, as [Stewart] is trying to spoil the ball, the back of the Fremantle player’s head makes contact above his eye socket. That’s caused fracture that needed repair," he told geelongcats.com.au on Thursday.

"He had surgery two days ago. There were some screws put around there, it was significant surgery."

He said, at this stage, Stewart will miss at least a month.

"Initially we think it will be four to six weeks before we see him again," he said.

Stewart has played 12 games for the Cats this season after being picked up as a rookie from Geelong's VFL team.
