Turnbull on Justine Damond: "We Are Demanding Answers"
PM calls for explanation
WHAT HAPPENED?: Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is calling for answers over the death of a Sydney woman in Minnesota (ABC)
The Prime Minister is the latest person to join the chorus of voices demanding an explanation for the shooting death of Sydney woman Justine Damond.
"We are demanding answers from the American authorities," Malcolm Turnbull told Triple M on Wednesday morning. "That's what our Consul-General will be doing right now in the United States."
The 40-year-old former Sydney vet dialled 911 on Saturday night because she believed a woman was being sexually assaulted near the Minneapolis house where she lived with her fiance Don.
When Ms Damond, believed to be holding a mobile phone, approached Officer Mohamed Noor's squad car in her pyjamas he leaned over from the passenger seat and shot her in the stomach.
The Minnesota medical examiner on Tuesday ruled her death a homicide, although the County Attorney is still deciding whether charges will be laid.
On Wednesday morning an anonymous source stated that fireworks which had been let off near the area may have started the rookie police officer, who had been in the job for a little over two years.
"It's inexplicable but there will be an explanation," Mr Turnbull said. "Our love, our condolences, our sympathies go out to her family who have suffered this terrible loss."
Serious questions were raised soon after the incident when it was revealed both officers had their body cameras switched off when she was gunned down, with her heartbroken fiance Don Damond slamming police for their lack of transparency on Monday.
"Our hearts are broken," he said. "Sadly her family and I have been provided with almost no additional information."
It follows a heartbreaking video from her 22-year-old stepson Zach.
“Basically my mum’s dead because a police officer shot her for reasons I don’t know,” he said, breaking down in tears.
The independent Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is carrying out an independent investigation into her death.
