TWO MOTORCYCLISTS ARRESTED ON BROOKER HIGHWAY - GRANTON

Two motorcyclists have had their motorcycles seized for three months after being detected travelling in excess of 80kph over the speed limit.

Members of the Operation Saturate taskforce detected a ‘P1’ licenced motorcyclist and a learner licenced motorcyclist travelling at 160kph in a 100kph zone after they overtook an unmarked police car just after 9pm last night on the Brooker Highway at Granton. They were intercepted on Black Snake Lane, Granton. Both motorcyclists were restricted to a maximum speed of 80kph due to their licence conditions.

A 17 year old boy and a 27 year old man have had their motorcycles seized for three months and have been charged with ‘Unnecessary Execution of Speed’. They will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court at a later date.

“It’s disappointing that motorcyclists continue to ride at excessive speeds, especially considering the high number of motorcyclists deaths on our roads over the last 12 months,” said Acting Sergeant Kriss Lawler.

“Just one week after National Road Safety week and we continue to see young, inexperienced riders risking not only their own lives, but the lives of other motorists. We’re urging riders to consider their actions and the high risk of being involved in a crash causing serious injury or death if they continue to ride irresponsibly.”
