Two trucks have collided on the West Gate Bridge heading outbound, forcing two lanes to close and leaving plenty of traffic delays across Melbourne.

LATEST UPDATE:

The Friday morning collision sent one truck into the safety barriers, damaging them.

One lane will be closed throughout the afternoon and during the peak hour trip home to continue the repair work.

It's caused major delays across the freeways, with the Monash Freeway at a standstill inbound.

Vic Roads spokesman Brad Arnoldt said the two lanes on the West Gate would remain closed until around 2:30 this afternoon, and expected significant delays even with one lane closed later in the day.

"There will be extended delays through the afternoon peak," he told Triple M.

"If you can find an alternative, do so...certainly allow that extra time."
