Cootamundra-Gundagai mayor Abb McAlister says the vandalism of the Dog on the Tuckerbox statue in Gundagai is "devastating" and "disappointing".

The iconic Australian statue, which has sat in the town for 87 years, was damaged on Saturday afternoon, McAlister said.

Mick Molloy wasn't happy about the news.

"I can't think of a more un-Australian act," he said.

A disappointed McAlister joined Kennedy Molloy on Monday and revealed the extent of the damage and how long it'll be before the statue's back in place.
