The Department of Transport and Main Roads says they've begun urgent remediation works to an embankment on the Cairns Western Arterial Road in Brinsmead.

Director General Neil Scales says safety of drivers is critical which means they've closed one lane to allow works to begin.

The lane closure is in place on the inbound lane, about 500 metres south of Loridan Drive in Brinsmead but both lanes are back in full use before the Ramsey Drive intersection.

Specialist equipment is on it's way to Cairns to minimise the closure period but Mr Scales is urging holiday makers and those who have the school run next week to remember to plan their trip and leave a little earlier.

Lengthy delays can be expected to road users travelling in bound.

They're expected to be completed by the 12th of June.
