Australia’s peak tourism-accommodation body said Victoria’s snap-lockdown had a damaging ripple-effect on the industry in Sydney.

Sydney’s hotels, motels and other accommodation providers, who had already struggled throughout the Coronavirus pandemic, were ravaged by cancellations following the implementation of Melbourne’s fourth lockdown.

Tourism Accommodation Australia CEO Michael Johnson said it had been a big blow to Sydney businesses.

Once Victoria goes into lockdown, we see occupancies back in [Sydney] CBD drop way back. We were ranging and starting to get up into the mid-40% occupancies and, of course, with Victoria locking down, which are a huge feeder, particularly out of Melbourne into Sydney, hotels went back below 20% this week,” the CEO said.
