Victoria Police Commander Tim Hansen explained the gang raids that netted 40 arrests in Victoria on the Hot Breakfast this morning.

“It’s been something that’s been in train now for the last three or four months,” Commander Hansen said.

“We had a fairly deep analysis around our operating practices and our deployments a couple of months ago and we came up with this tactic that’s multi-pronged.

“One is providing real-time intelligence about the whereabouts and the activities of a specific cohort of offenders who are committed to committing offences of carjacking, home invasions, street robberies and the like.

“We’ve sophisticated our intelligence feed so we’re able to have a better line of sight of who those offenders are.

The other aspect is that every now and then we will work towards coordinating these days of actions where we will strike, we will reach out, we will round these offenders up and we’ll place them before the courts and hold them accountable for their actions.

“And that’s pretty much, yesterday was the first day of those days, this is an ongoing practice from here on in, now can I put those people on notice.

“Those that we didn’t round up yesterday, you’re certainly on our list, we’ve certainly got a line of sight on our offending and we coming after you.”

Raids were conducted in suburbs as disparate as Dandenong, Reservoir and Sunshine, with 40 arrested predominantly in the south-east and west.

The majority of those arrested were between 15 and 21.
