Dr. Brett Sutton, Victoria’s Chief Medical Officer, explained on the Hot Breakfast this morning why local sport can go ahead.

“Obviously we’ve set these thresholds (on gatherings of over 100 people indoors and 500 outdoors), we want people to avoid those really packed circumstances,” Dr. Sutton said.

“But for any setting at any time with anyone, we are saying try and keep a reasonable distance.

“We understand that sports don’t always allow that to happen, but most of the contact will actually happen before and afterwards as people crowd around.

“So people need to be really aware of that distancing message, and all of those things around staying away if you’re unwell, washing your hands regularly apply.

“And I would love to see — and people should be as creative as possible — some new celebrations that are not hugs and close contact, but are new distance measures… because that’s important as well.”

Dr. Sutton also discussed how Victoria is reacting to the broader Coronavirus threat.
