Wrap up warm, we're set for a cold, cold night.

Snow is expected to fall down to 300m in Victoria overnight - and in some suburbs it's already started.

Senior Meteorologist Richard Carlyon from the Bureau of Meteorology Victoria said an unstable and cold airstream from the west will bring showers and storms across most of the state – with winds of up to 100 km/hr.

In addition to heavy winds and rain, snow is also expected overnight.

“It looks as though this could be the strongest cold outbreak overnight” he said.

While the snow level is currently sitting at 800m it will fall to 300m overnight.

Areas likely to see snow overnight include the Otway Ranges and the Strzelecki Ranges in South Gippsland,

There’s also chances of snow around Dandenong, Kinglake Ranges and also the Grampians.

Snow was spotted falling at Ferny Creek near the Dandenong Ranges at around 11am this morning.

As for when this cold start to spring will be over – he wasn’t sure.

“I can’t see it in the foreseeable future. We’re just going to have to wait a while.”
