Residents of Orange, Blayney and Cabonne, who failed to vote over the weekend, could be facing a penalty of $55, with voting at local elections compulsory for all enrolled electors.
The NSW Electoral commission says they are required to issue a penalty notice to those of us who appear to have failed to vote, however there are exceptions, the notice providing a few options.
If we believe we did cast a ballot, there’s the option to provide a claim with details of where we voted.
We can give a written reason for failing to vote, or apply to have the matter heard by a court, however this can result in a larger penalty
Of course, the notice also gives the option to simply pay the fine.
