The WA Police Force has confirmed that a member of the public reported to York Police Station today, with concerns that a needle had been found in a punnet of strawberries.

The man had found the needle in his sink after preparing strawberries for his family. He did not recall the needle being in the sink prior to preparing the strawberries.

The strawberries were produced and packaged in Western Australia. Police are conducting inquiries into this matter and liaising with other agencies.

Members of the public are encouraged to be cautious in handling strawberries and report any discoveries to local police, or by calling 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The Department of Health advises that locally grown strawberries are still able to be bought and eaten, but should be cut before eating.
