Before we go any further, take another look at that photo up there. Can you see a bloke surfing in it? It's probably a struggle to make him out - because the wave is almost 25 metres tall.

Rodrigo Koxa, a Brazilian surfer, has taken out the world record for the highest wave ever surfed after absolutely nailing this monstrosity in Portugal last year.

According to the World Surf League, Koxa rode the 24.38m wave during a session in Nazaré in November 2017, although the video has only just gone viral.

Check it out.

It is an almost unbelievably impressive feat, with the emphasis on unbelievably; how was it possible?

Well, if you're interested in the science behind it, it's a combination of the type of wave - a "wind-driven wave" that can "travel across entire ocean bases" - and the shoreline off Nazaré.

As LiveScience explains, the Portuguese surfing hotspot features two "amplifying effects" in its "intense upward slope" coming into the shore and its "huge, constructive-interference-generating underwater walls".

Basically, there's a big ol' gorge off the coast that propels monster waves towards the beach.

Case in point: The previous wave to break a record was 23.77 metres and was also surfed off Nazaré

Gnarly.
