More backburning is planned at Salamander Bay to contain a bushfire that came within metres of homes last night.

The blaze broke out in swamp near Mariner Crescent at around 6:30pm, behind the shopping centre, and quickly spread.

More than 60 RFS and Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters tackled the blaze overnight.

Stronger than expected winds saw a number of homes come under ember attack along Sandy Point Road and Foreshore Drive at about 3am.

As a result the threat level was upgraded to Watch and Act.

It's now back to the Advice level thanks to easing conditions.

Some local roads are closed, with diversions in place.

An RFS spokesperson says rain has fallen across the fireground but not enough to extinguish the fire completely.

Back burning will continue, resulting in increased smoke.

So far the fire has burnt through 80ha but that's expected to increase to 150ha.

No homes are currently under threat. Residents are urged to monitor conditions.
