Planning to improve four popular tourist destinations across the Western Downs has begun as master plans will be developed over the next few months.

The areas to be developed are Lake Broadwater, Caliguel Lagoon, the Chinchilla Weir and Mountain Bike Trails at Russell Park on the Bunya Mountains.

Western Downs Regional Council is encouraging community input into the study, which will consider what improvements, modifications and investments can be made at each of the sites.

Western Downs Mayor Paul McVeigh says that the master plans will help to position the Western Downs as a destination offering authentic, rural experiences.

“We are so lucky to have these beautiful natural assets in our region that provide recreation opportunities for locals and inviting destinations for tourists,” he said.

“We want to invest in these sites to ensure they continue to provide quality outdoor recreation opportunities while also strengthening their economic value to our region’s economy.”

Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Coordinator Matthew Robertson said sport and leisure planning consultants, Otium Planning Group have been engaged to assist in developing the master plans.

“The consultants will be running focus groups in Condamine, Chinchilla and Dalby and a survey will be released soon for community members to provide their input.”

Residents can also contact Otium Planning Group directly by emailing [email protected]

Once the initial consultation and planning phase has concluded, conceptual designs will be developed for each site and further consultation with the community will occur.

Western Downs Regional Council received funding through the Queensland Government Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning to develop the master plans.
