A whale watching company that is sick and tired of seeing stray boaties getting too close to the gentle giants, is asking its customers to dob in a hoon.

With the official season getting underway this weekend, Spirit of Gold Coast has launched its "Help Us To Help Our Whales" campaign.

Vessels aren't allowed within 100m of the mammals, and need to slow down to 6 knots within 300m, but are often seen breaking the rules.

"You can't go in front of them or behind them, and [some vessels] actually go through them, and doing that mum and calf can be separated; you can imagine the consequences," said Spirit of Gold Coast Administrator Angela Del Bianco.

This season, the company will have brochures on board its vessels, encouraging whale watchers to report any reckless behaviour straight to the authorities.
