He’s the greatest No.6 in the history of the game and a rugby league immortal but Wally Lewis, affectionately known as ‘King’ Wally, may never had the career he did if were not for a stroke of genius from another legend of Queensland Rugby League.

Speaking last night on the 40th Anniversary of the very first official State of Origin match Lewis told The Rush Hour with Dobbo how the great Arthur Beetson inspired Lewis’ shift from hooker to the role that he made his own. 

However, history might have been very different if the King had of gotten his way.

In front of 33,210 screaming fans at Lang Park Queensland would go on to shock the travelling New South Wales side, made up of the finest players the NSWRL had to offer, beating them 20-10 on a night that will long be remembered in the state’s history and ignite the incredible rivalry that we know today.

Lewis recalled his first meeting with the great Arthur Beetson before the historic match and it was pretty darn humbling for the king!
