What should happen to the Bendigo Gas Works?

It's the burning question and now council is inviting residents to have their say on the redevelopment options for the heritage asset.

The redevelopment option could include new pedestrian/cycle path links across the creek to Lake Weeroona, an interpretive trail, a new plaza for events, markets and site interpretation, an event space in the heart of the site, new lighting and other services, conservation of heritage buildings, new vehicle access and landscaping.

“Late last year we said we would hold a community drop in session  to allow residents to have their say on the project and Councillors and staff from the City’s Heritage and Property areas will be available to chat to residents at the session.  I encourage all interested residents and those who live nearby to drop into the session and have their say.”

- Bendigo Mayor Cr Margaret O’Rourke

All of the gasworks buildings and equipment are largely intact but in very poor condition as the site is frequently subjected to illegal entry and attacks by vandals.

Although closed for many years, the site is heavily contaminated from its previous use as a gas works.

Cleaning up the site and developing a plan for its future use will help protect the historic building and provide opportunities for the broader community.

Join a community drop in session on Wednesday May 23 from 3:30pm - 6pm at the Bendigo Tennis Centre pavilion, Nolan Street Bendigo to have your say!

Triple M breakfast show hosts Cogoho and Ez had a chat about the plans this morning.
