Northern Gold Coast Residents Avoid Bushfire Destruction
Wongawallan & Oxenford Were Affected
It was a scary afternoon for residents in Oxenford and Wongawallan yesterday as flames drew dangerously close to their homes.
Firies warned some people to prepare to leave the areas after large bushfires broke out thanks to those dry, hot and windy conditions.
The Wongawallan blaze was under control around 5:30pm.
It took another few hours for crews to contain the fire at Oxenford.
A high fire danger rating is still in place for the Gold Coast today.
EARLIER: Residents in the Wongawallan area are being told to prepare to leave their properties as a number of bushfires burn across South-East Queensland.
Queensland Fire & Emergency issued this statement on Wednesday afternoon:
"Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) advises there is a bushfire in Wongawallan and conditions could get worse.
You need to be ready to follow your bushfire survival plan. If you do not have a plan, or intend to leave, you should be ready to leave the area because the situation could get worse quickly.
Currently as at 4pm Wednesday, 28 November a fast-moving bushfire is travelling in an east/south-easterly direction from Elevation Drive towards Tamborine Oxenford Road, Wongawallan. The fire is likely to impact Elevation Drive, Tamborine Oxenford Road, Jourdana Drive and Howard Creek Place in the coming hours.
Fire crews are working to contain the fire but firefighters may not be able to protect every property. You should not expect a firefighter at your door.
People in the area will be affected by smoke, which will reduce visibility and air quality.
Call Triple Zero (000) immediately if you believe your property is under threat."
It comes after an early afternoon thunderstorm caused almost 10,000 homes and businesses across the Gold Coast to lose power.
Suburbs affected included Pimpama, Pacific Pines, Palm Beach and Elanora.
