We're a step closer to seeing a major upgrade to the M1 at Beresfield.

The state and federal governments have locked in construction firm Georgiou Group to carry out the work at the Weakleys Drive and John Renshaw Drive intersection.

It's due to start in March.

The busy roundabout's being replaced with traffic lights, while additional lanes are being added.

“This will improve traffic flow, travel times and safety for all road users on one of Australia’s busiest roads,” Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher said.

It's part of a wider $391.6 million package to upgrade the M1.

Work is well underway on widening the Tuggerah to Doyalson stretch, and improving the Kariong to Somersby section.
