New research has determined that workers from western Sydney are the hardest working people in the nation, following an in-depth look at working trends among young people.

The study, commissioned by the Australian Food and Grocery Council, found that experience working in food or grocery industries while studying has resulted in greater time management and problem solving skills.

It was determined that roughly three-quarters of residents in western Sydney had worked at some point in their lives at supermarkets, restaurants or convenience stores, with more than 60 per cent taking on work before 24.

This was typically while balancing school and work commitments, with 31 per cent in the work force in some capacity before they turned 18.

"Working in restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets and food shops is an ideal way for students to pick up indispensable life skills," AFGC chief executive Tanya Barden said.

"They can transfer (these) into careers as teachers, nurses, doctors, lawyers, public servants, skilled trades or more advanced business roles."
