A three year old boy is recovering in John Hunter Hospital following a dog attack at Mayfield last night.

He was riding his pushbike along Antill Street just after 6:30pm when he was bitten by the Great Dane, which ran towards him from a nearby property.

The boy suffered injuries to his face, neck and upper back.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police say his injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

Newcastle City Council and Police are investigating.

The Great Dane is one of the tallest dog breeds, however animal experts say they're not normally considered aggressive.
