A supermarket chain in the UK is facing a whole lot of backlash after trying to flog a "cauliflower steak" for close to $5.

Marks and Spencer's latest offering was brought to light by Twitter user Rachel Clarke, whose photo of the plastic-wrapped chunk of vegetable has since gone viral.

"Marks and Spencer stores are selling sliced cauliflower as 'Cauliflower Steak' with lots of lovely plastic and charging £2 (normally £2.50).

"A cauliflower costs about 69p [$1.20] from a local veg shop."

The product is being sold as part of the chain's vegetarian range and consists of two pieces of cauliflower and a sachet of "lemon and herb drizzle".

And while Clarke's original Tweet has since been made private, it's still garnering plenty of reaction.

"People who buy this must have more money than sense!" one user wrote. "What a wasteful item. Like you say, buy a cauliflower, wash it and cut (and use all of it)."

Another added: "No need for this. Easy enough to buy a cauliflower without all the wrapping from a grocer and slice it. I despair."

Which, fair enough, we totally get but we're all missing the real issue here.

Cauliflower STEAK? Not a thing. Never a thing.

Make it stop.
