Look... in our humble eyes, there is no more perfect way to spend a summer's evening here in Oz than spending a warm, balmy evening, poolside, tucking into another perfectly cooked steak, possibly with a salad (possibly not), and enjoying a couple of quiet ones.

Of course... the million dollar question is to how best cook that perfectly cooked steak?

Well, we've asked all the meat eaters around the office and it almost came to blows... There was talk of reverse searing, straight out oven baking, checking the "doneness" against the palm of your hand...

Madness!

So, we did some googling and lo and behold, there's an app that walks you through cooking the perfect steak

However, if you're technologically challenged, or you simply want to take our word for it, following is a foolproof way to cook the perfect steak.

Four words... Seared Then Oven Baked

Works best with: Thick cuts

A bloke here in the office swears by this method and reckons it's so easy, even the most useless of cooks could pull off a gourmet steak.

Here's how you do it.

  1. Get your piece of meat to room temperature. This is super important
  2. Set the oven to 180 degrees Celsius
  3. Rub both sides of the meat with a little olive oil, some sea salt and ground pepper
  4. On a super hot, oven-proof frypan or griddle pan, cook the first side of the steak for around 1 minute 30.
  5. Repeat for the other side. Again, for around 1.30.
  6. Once both sides are seared, place the frypan in the oven and cook for your desired time

    - Rare: 5 minutes
    - Medium-rare: 8 minutes
    - Medium: 11 minutes
    - Well-done: You're on your own ;)

  7. Once done (and this bit is super important too)... grab a bit of alfoil and wrap the steak up to let it rest. Rest it for exactly 5 minutes.

Of course, anyone who knows their steak knows of the reverse sear method... It's essentially the above process but in reverse.

Either way, here's hoping you get the chance to enjoy a perfectly cooked steak this festive season! Cheers to that!
