Lord of the Rings, the hugely popular J. R. R. Tolkien book and movie series is coming to the small screen.

Deadline Hollywood is reporting Amazon has shelled out a huge $200 million USD to Tolkien's estate for the rights to make a Lord of the Rings TV series, giving it a "multiple-season" commitment.

Amazon is set drop a further $100 million on the first season alone.

"The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen," Amazon Studios scripted TV head Sharon Tal Yguado said in a press release.

The upcoming series will reportedly take place before the events of Fellowship of the Ring, but there are so far no other details on the plot or release date of what will be one of the most hotly anticipated TV series in a long time.
