Filming for the upcoming sixth instalment of the massively popular Mission Impossible franchise has been put on hold following a significant injury to star Tom Cruise.

Video emerged earlier in the week of Cruise injuring himself performing a stunt, now it has been revealed that he has a broken ankle.

Cruise, who famously performs almost all of his own stunts, was seen jumping between two buildings, but fell short and hit the ledge of the complex.

Video shows him significantly limping after the stunt.

It was initially speculated that the limping might have been part of the filming, but Paramount Pictures released a statement today confirming Cruise's significant injury.

“During production on the latest Mission: Impossible film, Tom Cruise broke his ankle while performing a stunt," the statement read.

“Production will go on hiatus while Tom makes a full recovery, and the film remains on schedule to open July 27, 2018.

“Tom wants to thank you all for your concern and support and can’t wait to share the film with everyone next summer.”
