Joaquin Phoenix is the latest in a loooong line of actors to add "Joker" to his IMDb profile after Warner Bros. gave his "unique" new movie the greenlight.

Phoenix has apparently been keen as to get a less blockbuster-y comic book movie for a few years now but thought that this particular Batman villain had had enough incarnations to last a lifetime.

Speaking to Collider, the 43-year-old said he had wondered to his manager: "Why don't they want to take one of these characters and just make a lower budget film about it, a movie but a character study, and why not take one of the villains?"

He baulked at the idea of actually meeting with Warner Bros., though, and promptly forgot about it - until he heard about this project.

"It feels unique, it is its own world in some ways, and maybe, mostly, it scares the f*cking sh*t out of me or something," Phoenix said.

"It might as well be the thing that scares you the most."

Directed by Todd Phillips, the unnamed Joker flick will be "an exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale".

As of yet, there is no release date.
