Australian (slash Kiwi) Hollywood star Russell Crowe has joined an already stacked cast for a new Ned Kelly flick.

The Academy Award winner will star in the fictionalised biopic of the Kelly Gang, based on the novel written by Peter Carey, The True History of the Kelly Gang.

The film's reins have been handed to South Aussie director Justin Kurzel, who gave us the brilliant but highly violent Snowtown, 2015's Macbeth, and Assassin's Creed.

Crowe will star alongside X-Men's Nicholas Hoult, Essie Davis (The Babadook, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries), Travis Fimmel (Vikings) and Darce Montgomery (Stranger Things 2).

So far the Gladiator star's role in the film is unknown, as are all the other roles, with only English actor Harry McKay (Fantastic Beasts) known to be playing the famous Bushranger, Ned Kelly.
